Case IH 4103 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.1 - Neutral Set point

Issue description

This code indicates that the controller is unable to determine, calibrate, or physically reach the neutral set point for the spool valve on Rear Remote No. 1. When this happens, the system typically locks out the affected remote valve and switches it to a fail-safe mode to prevent unintended hydraulic movement. This is most commonly caused by an internal failure of the electronic pilot head.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Magnum Series (235, 260, 290, 315, 340, 380)
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series (350 to 600 horsepower models)
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the Remote: Swap your implement's hydraulic hoses to a different remote (e.g., Remote #2 or #3). If the implement works fine on another remote, the issue is isolated to the tractor's Remote #1 valve.

  2. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for related voltage codes such as 4104 (Under Voltage) or 4105 (Over Voltage). If these are present, the issue is likely a damaged wiring harness, a corroded connector, or a bad ground at the pilot head rather than a mechanical failure of the valve itself.

  3. Inspect the Harness: Visually inspect the electrical connector plugging into the Remote #1 pilot head for moisture, dirt, or bent pins.

  4. Attempt Calibration: Try to run the remote valve calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). If the calibration fails specifically because it cannot find the neutral position, the pilot head is internally defective and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the remote levers/switches in the cab.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean and degrease the area around the rear remote valve stack before disassembly.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the Remote #1 pilot head.

  4. Remove the Pilot Head

Remove the retaining bolts that secure the electronic pilot head to the main hydraulic remote valve body. Carefully pull the pilot head away from the valve block.

  5. Install the New Part

Install the new pilot head, ensuring that the mating surfaces are perfectly clean and that all necessary O-rings are properly seated.

  6. Reassembly

Torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specification and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Mandatory Calibration

Using the tractor's display or the CNH EST, reassign the valve addresses so the controller knows which cab lever controls the new valve, and run the tuning calibration so the EHR controller can learn the new valve's specific neutral set point and flow characteristics.
