Case IH 4106 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.1 - Spool Deflection Too Short

Issue description

This code indicates that the control module commanded the #1 rear remote valve to move, but the internal position transducer detected that the valve spool did not travel the expected distance. This is typically caused by a failing electric pilot head (actuator) on the valve, or mechanical binding/debris inside the valve spool itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Perform the Swap Test: Swap the electric pilot head (actuator module) from Rear Remote #1 with a known-working remote (such as #2 or #3). If the code follows the pilot head, it is electronically failing. If the code remains on #1, the issue is mechanical binding or an internal fault within the #1 valve body/spool

  2. Check the wiring harness and connector at the #1 remote valve for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing

  3. Verify if the valve has been operated manually, as manual override can sometimes trigger related deflection codes

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Thoroughly clean the area around the rear remote valves. Hydraulic systems are highly sensitive to contamination, and dirt ingress during this repair will cause immediate valve failure. Relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Pilot Head Replacement

If the swap test proved the pilot head is faulty: Disconnect the electrical harness from the #1 remote valve pilot head. Remove the retaining hardware securing the pilot head to the valve body. Install the new pilot head and torque to manufacturer specifications. Reconnect the harness.

  3. Valve Body Replacement

If the swap test proved the valve body is the issue (mechanical binding is found): The remote valve section must be removed, inspected for scoring/debris, and likely replaced.

  4. Calibration

After replacing the pilot head or valve, you must perform a calibration procedure. Reassign the valve addresses so the EHR controller knows which cab lever controls the newly installed valve. Run the EHR valve calibration using the tractor's display monitor or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to tune the valve for proper flow and function.
