Case IH 4109 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Controller or Armrest / TMF Controller: Rear remote no. 1 - manually operated
Issue description
Triggered when the system detects that the spool for the #1 rear remote hydraulic valve has moved without an electronic command from the cab controls. This happens either because an operator is physically moving the manual override lever on the valve, or because of a failure in the valve's internal position sensor (potentiometer) or electronic pilot head, which causes the controller to falsely read manual spool movement.

Check the cause
Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Verify that the manual override lever on the #1 rear remote valve is not stuck, bound by debris, or being physically actuated.
Harness & Connection Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the EHR/Armrest controller to the #1 remote valve pilot head. Look for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins that could cause a false sensor reading.
Component Isolation (Swap Test): To determine if the issue is the electronic pilot head or the tractor's wiring, swap the pilot head (the electronic actuator module on top of the valve) from remote #1 with remote #2 or #3. If the fault code changes to the corresponding remote (e.g., 4114/4115/4120 for remote #2), the pilot head is faulty. If the code remains 4109, the issue is in the wiring harness or controller.
Hydraulic Pressure Check: Ensure the system is providing correct pilot pressure to the valve block, as incorrect pressure can cause spool movement faults.
Repair steps
Depressurize
Turn off the tractor, disconnect the battery, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure by cycling the remote levers/switches.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the #1 rear remote valve pilot head.
Remove Component
Unbolt and remove the faulty pilot head from the top of the valve body. If the internal spool is heavily worn, the entire valve section (slice) may need to be removed from the hydraulic stack.
Install
Mount the new pilot head or replacement valve section and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassign and Calibrate
Use the tractor's display monitor (e.g., AFS Pro) or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to reassign the valves and run a calibration procedure so the controller recognizes the new module and learns the neutral/float positions.
