4113

Case IH 4113 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.1 - Spool Not in Neutral When Switched On

Issue description

The system has detected that the spool position sensor for the #1 rear remote valve is not reading the neutral position when the tractor's ignition is turned on or when the remote is activated, which typically locks up the hydraulic functions for that remote until the tractor is restarted.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum Series 210
  • Magnum Series 235
  • Magnum Series 245
  • Magnum Series 255
  • Magnum Series 275
  • Magnum Series 280
  • Magnum Series 310
  • Magnum Series 340
  • Magnum Series 4
  • Magnum AFS Connect
  • Steiger Series
  • Quadtrac Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • CVX Series

Check the cause

  1. Physical Switch/Lever Inspection: Check the remote lever or switch in the cab to ensure it is not physically stuck, binding, or failing to return to the neutral position.

  2. Wiring and Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to the remote valve #1 pilot head for shorts, open circuits, or voltage drops.

  3. Mechanical Binding: Check for mechanical binding of the valve spool itself preventing the spool from centering.

  4. Calibration: Check if the system has lost calibration. Attempt to recalibrate the EHR remote valves via the tractor's display monitor.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize

Ensure the tractor is turned off, the key is removed, and all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the system.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Locate the rear remote valve stack at the rear of the tractor. Identify Valve #1.

  3. Remove the Pilot Head

Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the mounting screws and carefully detach the pilot head assembly.

  4. Inspect the Main Spool

With the pilot head removed, inspect the main flow control spool. If the spool is mechanically stuck, carefully remove it from the remote valve section. Lubricate the spool with clean hydraulic oil and reassemble.

  5. Install New Components

If replacing the pilot head or the spool, install the new components. Ensure O-rings are seated correctly. Tighten the valve spool cover screws (OEM spec for some Magnum/Steiger models is 27-31 Nm / 19-22 lb-ft).

  6. Recalibrate

After replacing the pilot head or spool, you must recalibrate the EHR system through the tractor's diagnostic menu so the controller can learn the new neutral position.
