Case IH 4117 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Hydraulic Remote): Rear remote no. 2 – switched to failsafe
Issue description
The control module has detected an anomaly or fault condition with the #2 rear remote hydraulic valve. To prevent unintended hydraulic movement, implement drops, or system damage, the controller has disabled electronic control of this specific valve and placed it into a failsafe mode.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Maxxum
- Steiger T4B
- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum Series
- Puma Series
- Steiger Series
- Maxxum / MXU Series
- CVX Models
Check the cause
Check for manual override: Ensure the manual levers are in the neutral position, as manual operation of the #2 remote valve will trigger the failsafe mode.
Check for accompanying fault codes: Look for related codes that pinpoint the exact failure (e.g., 4118/4119 for voltage issues, 4120/4121 for a sticking spool, 4124/4125 for driver or potentiometer faults).
Inspect wiring and connectors: Check the wiring harness connecting the EHR controller to the #2 rear remote valve for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins at the electrical connector.
Check for mechanical spool sticking: Ensure the spool is not mechanically sticking due to hydraulic oil contamination or wear.
Attempt calibration: Use the tractor's display or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform an EHR remote valve calibration to confirm if it is a hard hardware issue.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure.
Access the Valve Stack
Locate the rear remote valve block at the rear of the tractor. Identify the #2 valve section (usually the second slice from the priority valve or end cap).
Electrical Cleaning
Disconnect the electrical connector to the #2 remote valve. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect. Clear the code and test. If the code returns, proceed to step 4.
Valve Replacement/Overhaul
If the spool is sticking or the internal potentiometer/driver has failed, the valve section must be serviced. Install an updated main spool if applicable, or remove the four tie-rod bolts holding the valve stack together, slide out the #2 valve section, and install the replacement slice.
Reassembly
Torque the valve stack tie-rods to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical connector.
Calibration
Turn the key on. Use the EST or the onboard diagnostic menu to clear the 4117 fault code. You must perform the EHR remote valve calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new valve's neutral and maximum flow positions.
