4118

Case IH 4118 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) / ATC (Armrest Tractor Controller): Rear remote no. 2 - under voltage

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the Rear Remote #2 spool position sensor (potentiometer) that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the remote valve's pilot head/potentiometer.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Steiger
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the Rear Remote No. 2 valve for corrosion, pushed-back pins, moisture intrusion, or physical wire damage.

  2. Disconnect the connector at the remote valve, turn the key to ON, and measure the reference voltage supply (typically 5V) and verify the ground circuit is intact.

  3. Test the signal wire from the remote valve connector back to the EHR controller for continuity, open circuits, or a short to ground.

  4. Swap the pilot head of Remote No. 2 with a known working remote (like No. 1 or No. 3) to see if the fault code changes location (indicating a faulty pilot head) or remains 4118 (indicating a wiring/controller issue).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect battery power before servicing electrohydraulic components.

  2. Wiring Repair

If the harness failed the continuity test, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Valve Removal

If the pilot head/potentiometer is faulty, thoroughly clean the area around the remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Replace Component

Remove the retaining bolts securing the pilot head to the remote valve body. Remove the faulty unit and install the new pilot head (or complete valve section). Torque the bolts to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new valve.

  6. Reassign and Calibrate

Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop or the tractor's advanced display monitor to reassign the valves so the controller recognizes the new pilot head. Once reassigned, perform a valve spool calibration procedure to learn the new neutral, extend, and retract limits.
