Case IH 412 – ENG (Engine Control Module / ECM): J1708 data link cannot transmit

Issue description

This condition occurs when the Engine Control Module (ECM) starts communicating with another device on the J1708/J1587 data link network, but then loses the ability to transmit data. This is typically caused by an electrical short in the data link wiring, a module sending too many messages without stopping (tying up the network), or unplugging an electronic service tool before keying off the ECM.

Check the cause

  1. Check Diagnostic Port Power: Ensure your diagnostic tool is receiving power by checking for battery voltage (minimum 12V) between the Power pin and the Ground pin on the diagnostic connector.

  2. Check for Network Shorts (Module Disconnected): Disconnect all modules on the J1708 network and measure the resistance between the J1708 Data Link + and J1708 Data Link - pins. It should read OL (Open Circuit).

  3. Check for Shorts to Ground: With all modules unplugged, measure the resistance from the J1708 Data Link + wire to chassis ground, and then from the J1708 Data Link - wire to ground. Both should read OL.

  4. Isolate the Faulty Module: If the wiring tests fine (reads OL), plug the ECMs back into the vehicle one at a time to see if a specific module causes the network to crash or the 412 code to return.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Service Tool Error

    If you recently used a diagnostic scanner, ensure you did not unplug the electronic service tool while the key was still ON. Key off the equipment, properly connect the tool, key on, and attempt to clear the code.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If your multimeter tests revealed a short circuit (either wire-to-wire or wire-to-ground), physically trace the J1708 twisted-pair wiring harness. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or corrosion, particularly near the engine block or transmission housing. Splice and repair the damaged wires, maintaining the standard 1-twist-per-inch for J1708 cables.

  3. Replace Corrupted Module

    If the wiring is intact but isolating the modules revealed a specific controller is tying up the network, replace that faulty module.

  4. Verify Repair

    Reconnect all modules, turn the key ON, and use your electronic service tool to verify that the ECM is communicating properly and the 412 fault code has changed to an Inactive state.
