4128

Case IH 4128 – EHR (Electro Hydraulic Remote) control system: Rear Remote No. 3 - No Control Message Received

Issue description

Fault code 4128 indicates that the tractor's main control network is not receiving CAN bus control messages from the Electro Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve number 3. This is a communication failure meaning the electronic actuator (pilot head) on the #3 rear remote valve has lost contact with the tractor's control system, preventing the valve from operating electronically.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Farmall Pro EP

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and the electrical connector at the #3 rear remote valve for corrosion, backed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or wire chafing.

  2. Verify that the EHR valve is receiving proper power and ground. Undervoltage or overvoltage conditions can cause the valve's internal module to drop off the CAN bus.

  3. Perform a swap test by moving the electrical connector from Remote #3 to an adjacent, known-good remote valve (such as #2 or #4). If the fault code changes to the new remote's code, the electronic pilot head on valve #3 has failed. If the code remains 4128, the issue lies within the wiring harness or the main controller.

  4. Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu (e.g., the HH menu on the instrument cluster) or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that the armrest lever/switch for remote #3 is functioning and sending the correct command signals to the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the damaged CAN bus wires or replace the EHR control valve wire harness entirely.

  3. Replace the Pilot Head / Valve

If the valve's electronic actuator is faulty, thoroughly clean the area around the valve to prevent hydraulic contamination. Remove the retaining bolts securing the electronic pilot head to the hydraulic valve body.

  4. Installation

Install the new pilot head (or the complete valve section, depending on the replacement part sourced) and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Reconnect the electrical harness to the valve and reconnect the battery.

  6. Reassign Valve Addresses

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). You must reassign the valve addresses in the software so the central controller recognizes the new valve's presence on the CAN bus and knows which armrest lever controls it.

  7. Calibration

Perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the EST or the onboard diagnostic menu to tune the valve for proper spool travel and neutral positioning.
