Case IH 4131 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) module: Rear Remote No. 3 - Switched to failsafe
Issue description
The system has detected an internal fault, an implausible signal, or a failure to reach neutral in the number 3 rear remote valve. To prevent unintended hydraulic movement or damage, the controller disables the valve and forces it into a failsafe (neutral) mode.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying EHR codes (e.g., 4132, 4133, 4134, 4135, 4138, or 4139) that might pinpoint the exact electrical or mechanical failure.
Clear the error code first and test the system for normal operation, as it may have been triggered by a temporary glitch or a conflicting command.
Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the #3 EHR valve for corrosion, pushed pins, or physical damage.
Perform a swap test by moving the electrical connector from the #3 remote valve to an adjacent known-good valve (like #2 or #4). If the fault code changes to the new valve number, the issue is in the wiring harness or controller. If the fault remains 4131, the EHR valve itself is faulty.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system before servicing.
Disconnect Electronics
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the #3 rear remote valve.
Remove the Valve
Unbolt the tie-rods holding the hydraulic valve stack together. Carefully remove the #3 remote valve section, ensuring you do not lose or damage the O-rings between the valve slices.
Replace the Component
Install the replacement EHR valve or the updated main spool assembly. (Note: If the valve was surging prior to failing, Case IH service bulletins recommend installing an updated main spool with an additional hydraulic oil bleed).
Reassemble
Reinstall the valve stack. Torque the tie-rod bolts strictly to the OEM specification. Over-tightening can cause the spools to bind, which will immediately trigger spool movement fault codes.
Calibrate
Reconnect the electrical harness. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display to clear the fault codes. You must then perform the EHR valve calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new valve's neutral, extend, and retract limits.
