Case IH 4131 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear remote no. 3 - not commanded neutral on power-up

Issue description

The controller has detected that the command lever or switch for Rear Remote #3 was not in the neutral (center) position when the tractor's key was turned on. As a safety precaution, the system switches to a failsafe mode, locking out the hydraulic functions for that specific remote valve until the system registers a neutral command or the tractor is restarted.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum series (235–340 Series 4)
  • STX Steiger series (350–600)
  • Puma series (165–225 CVX)
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the #3 remote lever/paddle on the armrest is physically sitting in the center (neutral) detent position. Turn the tractor off, verify the lever position, and turn the key back on to see if the code clears.

  2. Attempt to recalibrate the armrest EHR switches via the A-post display or by using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  3. Swap the electrical connector of the #3 armrest lever with the #4 lever inside the armrest console. If the fault code changes to the #4 remote (e.g., code 4145/4146), the lever's internal potentiometer is confirmed defective. If the code remains on #3, there is a wiring harness issue between the armrest and the EHR controller.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery.

Begin the repair procedure for a failed potentiometer in the armrest lever.

  2. Remove the retaining screws to open the armrest control console panel.

  3. Locate the #3 EHR remote lever assembly.

  4. Disconnect the wiring harness connector attached to the bottom of the defective lever.

  5. Unbolt/unclip the defective lever assembly from the armrest panel.

  6. Install the new remote valve lever/switch assembly and reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Reassemble the armrest console.

  8. Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor.

  9. Perform the EHR lever calibration procedure via the A-post display or the EST laptop to sync the new potentiometer's voltage sweep with the EHR controller.
