Case IH 4133 – EHR (Electro Hydraulic Remote) control module: Rear remote no. 3 - over voltage

Issue description

The control system has detected that the voltage signal coming from the circuit of the number 3 rear electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve is higher than the expected maximum threshold. This is typically caused by a short to power in the wiring harness, a failed spool position potentiometer/transducer on the valve, or an internal fault within the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Steiger
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active EHR codes using the tractor's display or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to rule out a shared ground failure or main controller issue.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the Rear Remote No. 3 valve for physical damage, pinched wires, water intrusion, or corrosion.

  3. Perform a swap test by exchanging the electrical connector from Rear Remote No. 3 with an adjacent known-good remote (e.g., No. 2 or No. 4) to isolate the fault to the valve or the wiring.

  4. Use a multimeter to test the signal wire at the valve connector for a short to a 12V power source.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the wiring harness between the EHR controller and the remote valve, locate the chafed or melted section of the wire. Splice and solder in a new section of wire, seal it with heat-shrink tubing, and secure the harness away from pinch points.

  3. Connector Replacement

If the connector at the valve is corroded or internally shorted, cut off the old connector and wire in a new OEM pigtail connector. Apply dielectric grease to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  4. Valve / Potentiometer Replacement

If the swap test proved the valve itself is faulty, replace the spool position potentiometer (transducer cap) if available separately, or replace the entire EHR valve section for Remote No. 3.

  5. Reassembly and Clearing Codes

Reconnect all electrical connections and the battery. Turn the key on and use the EST or the tractor's diagnostic menu to clear the stored 4133 fault code.

  6. Calibration

If a new EHR valve section or controller was installed, perform an EHR valve calibration procedure using the EST so the controller can learn the neutral, extend, and retract voltage parameters of the new valve.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • EHR Rear Remote Valve Section

Replaces the entire faulty hydraulic valve slice.

  • Spool Position Potentiometer / Transducer Cap

Replaces the electrical sensor on the end of the valve if available separately.

  • EHR Control Module

Only required if the controller itself has an internal short causing the over-voltage output.

  • Remote Valve Electrical Connector Pigtail

Used to repair a shorted or corroded harness connection.
