Case IH 4134 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.3 - Spool Deflection Too Short

Issue description

The internal spool of the #3 rear hydraulic remote valve is not traveling its full commanded distance. This is typically a mechanical issue where the spool is binding, restricted by internal debris, or suffering from an internal valve fault. It can also occur if the position transducer fails to accurately read the physical movement of the spool.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235–340 Series 4, MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Case IH Puma Series (e.g., 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check for external damage, dirt, or debris around the #3 rear remote valve stack.

  2. Electrical Testing: Inspect the electrical harness and connector at the #3 remote valve for corrosion, loose pins, or damage.

  3. Check for Related Codes: Look for related voltage codes (such as 4132 for undervoltage or 4133 for overvoltage) which could indicate an electrical supply issue to the valve rather than a mechanical spool issue. Also, ensure the valve is not being operated manually, which triggers code 4137.

  4. Calibration Check: Attempt to run a remote valve calibration via the tractor's monitor. If the spool is not calibrated (which triggers code 4218), it may not deflect properly.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize

Relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing the valve block to prevent injury.

  2. Clean

Thoroughly clean the exterior of the rear remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness from the #3 remote valve actuator and position sensor.

  4. Inspect Spool

Remove the position sensor and actuator end cap from the valve to inspect the spool. Check the spool for physical binding, scoring, broken centering springs, or contamination.

  5. Clean or Replace

If debris is present, clean the spool and bore. If the spool is heavily scored or the proportional actuator has failed mechanically, the entire valve section (slice) must be replaced.

  6. Reassemble

Reassemble the valve stack using new O-rings between the valve sections.

  7. Recalibrate

Reconnect the electrical harness and perform the EHR remote valve calibration procedure using the tractor's display or a dealer service tool to ensure the module learns the new spool travel limits.
