Case IH 4135 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) / ATC (Armrest Tractor Controller): Rear Remote No.3 - Spool Deflection Excessive

Issue description

The internal spool of the #3 rear remote hydraulic valve has traveled further than the commanded position or beyond its normal operating range. This indicates a valve internal fault, possibly mechanical (such as a broken centering spring), or severe fluid contamination causing the spool to stick and over-travel.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH MXM Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the operator has not been manually forcing the valve at the rear of the tractor (manual override)

  2. Check the hydraulic fluid for severe contamination or debris causing the spool to stick

  3. Check the position transducer for failure falsely reporting excessive deflection

  4. Perform an electronic calibration of the rear remote valves via the tractor's H-Menu/display

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Hydraulic Pressure

Turn off the tractor and cycle the remote levers/buttons to relieve all trapped hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

Locate the rear remote valve stack at the rear of the tractor. Identify slice No. 3 (usually counted from the inside out or bottom up, depending on the specific tractor chassis).

  3. Disconnect Electrical Harness

Unplug the electrical connector to the #3 electro-hydraulic valve actuator and position transducer.

  4. Remove the Valve Section

Unbolt the tie-rods holding the hydraulic valve stack together. Carefully separate the #3 valve section from the stack, ensuring you do not lose or pinch the O-rings between the slices.

  5. Inspect / Replace

Replace the entire #3 valve section, as modern electro-hydraulic proportional valves are highly sensitive and often not serviceable at the internal spool level.

  6. Reassembly

Install the new valve section with new O-rings. Torque the valve stack tie-rods to the OEM specification found in your specific model's service manual.

  7. Final Calibration

Reconnect the electrical harness, power on the tractor, and perform a mandatory hydraulic valve calibration procedure so the EHR module can learn the new valve's exact spool travel limits.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Electrohydraulic Rear Remote Control Valve Section (Slice)

    84230181

Maxxum / Puma series. Verify if Bosch Rexroth SB-series or other OEM supplier, and configuration (single/double acting or motor return).

  • Electrohydraulic Rear Remote Control Valve Section (Slice)

    719195010

General Case IH Surplus. Verify if Bosch Rexroth SB-series or other OEM supplier, and configuration (single/double acting or motor return).

  • O-ring seal kit

Always order the O-ring seal kit for the valve stack when replacing a single slice.
