Case IH 4136 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.3 - Open Center Position Not Reached
Issue description
The electronic controller has commanded the spool inside the #3 rear remote hydraulic valve to return to its neutral (open center) position, but the position transducer (sensor) on the valve is reporting that the spool has not physically reached that position. This condition is typically caused by mechanical binding of the valve spool, a failed position transducer, or an electrical wiring issue preventing the sensor's signal from reaching the controller.

Check the cause
Inspect the #3 rear remote valve for external damage, heavy dirt, or debris that might restrict the spool's movement. Ensure any manual override lever or knob is not stuck or left in a manual operation state.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the #3 remote valve's position transducer and pilot solenoids. Inspect for corrosion, bent pins, moisture ingress, or wire chafing along the harness leading back to the EHR module.
Use a multimeter to check the voltage and resistance of the position transducer. Compare the readings against OEM specifications to determine if the sensor is reading out of range or has an internal short/open.
Attempt to run a hydraulic remote valve calibration through the tractor's cab display monitor. If the valve fails calibration, it confirms a hard mechanical fault in the spool travel or a dead sensor.
Repair steps
Relieve Hydraulic Pressure
Turn off the tractor engine. Cycle the remote levers or buttons in the cab to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.
Disconnect Electrical Components
Unplug the wiring harness connectors from the #3 rear remote valve (both the solenoids and the position sensor).
Remove the Valve Slice
If binding is suspected, unbolt the #3 remote valve slice from the rear hydraulic stack.
Inspect and Clean the Spool
Carefully remove the spool from the valve body. Inspect the spool and the bore for scoring, metal shavings, or debris that could cause it to stick. Clean the spool and bore thoroughly with hydraulic parts cleaner.
Replace Seals or Sensor
If the spool was physically sticking, replace the O-rings and seals before reassembly. If the spool moves freely but the code persists, the position transducer (sensor) or the electronic actuator head is defective and must be replaced (or the entire valve slice if internal components are not serviced separately).
Reassemble and Install
Reinstall the valve slice into the hydraulic stack. Torque the tie-rod bolts to OEM specifications to prevent warping the valve body (which can cause new binding). Reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors.
Perform Calibration
Start the tractor and allow the hydraulic fluid to reach operating temperature. Access the EHR calibration menu via the cab display and perform the remote valve calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new neutral/open center position.
