Case IH 4141 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) or ATC (Armrest/Tractor Controller): Rear Remote No.3 - Spool Not in Neutral When Switched On
Issue description
When the tractor's ignition is turned on, the system runs a self-diagnostic check. If the controller detects that the spool for the #3 rear remote valve is not in its centered (neutral) position, it triggers this code. This is a built-in safety mechanism that immediately locks out and shuts down that specific hydraulic remote to prevent unintended implement movement at startup.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Magnum
- Maxxum
- Steiger T4B
- MAXXUM T4E
- Steiger Series
- Magnum Series
- Puma Series
- Maxxum Series
- CVX / Optum Series
Check the cause
Ensure the in-cab switch or lever for Remote #3 is not physically stuck, locked in a detent, or obstructed from returning to the neutral position.
Inspect and clean the electrical connectors on the #3 valve block, as they are highly susceptible to mud, dirt, and moisture contamination.
If multiple remotes are throwing faults simultaneously (e.g., Remote #1 and #4 also locking up), check if a software reflash of the armrest controller is needed.
Attempt a valve calibration procedure to force the valve to find neutral. If the fault returns shortly after, it indicates a hardware failure in the valve driver.
Repair steps
Locate valve
Locate the #3 rear remote valve on the hydraulic stack at the rear of the tractor.
Disconnect harness
Disconnect the wiring harness from the pilot head assembly on the #3 valve.
Remove pilot head
Unbolt and remove the faulty pilot head from the main remote valve section.
Install new pilot head
Lubricate the O-rings with clean hydraulic oil and install the new pilot head assembly.
Reassign valve addresses
After replacing the pilot head, you must use a diagnostic service tool (or the tractor's H-Menu on older models) to reassign the valve addresses so the controller knows which in-cab lever controls the new valve.
Perform calibration
Perform a final valve calibration procedure to tune the new pilot head for proper flow and function.
