4142

Case IH 4142 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) module or ATC (Armrest/Tractor Controller): Rear remote no. 4 - no control message received

Issue description

Loss of CAN bus communication or electrical signal between the tractor's main controller and the electronic control head on the #4 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum series (e.g., 235–340 Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger series (e.g., 350–600)
  • Case IH Puma series (e.g., 115–225, CVX, Multicontroller)
  • Case IH Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector plugging directly into Rear Remote Valve No. 4 for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or physical damage.

  2. Verify that the EHR valve is receiving proper power and ground. Check the specific fuse for the rear remotes.

  3. Test the CAN bus communication lines at the valve connector for proper voltage (typically around 2.5V on CAN High and CAN Low).

  4. Perform a swap test: Swap the electrical connector from Remote No. 4 with the connector for Remote No. 3. Turn the key on. If the fault code changes to the corresponding code for Remote No. 3, the wiring harness is the issue. If the fault code remains 4142, the electronic control head on the #4 valve has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery isolator switch to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic swap test revealed a wiring issue, trace the harness back to the ATC/Armrest controller. Repair any broken wires or replace the EHR pigtail connector.

  3. Valve Replacement (If Applicable)

If the valve's electronic head has failed, thoroughly clean the area around the rear remote stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect lines and connector

Disconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical connector from Remote No. 4.

  5. Remove faulty valve

Unbolt the tie-rods holding the remote valve stack together and carefully remove the faulty EHR valve section.

  6. Install new valve

Install the new EHR valve section with new O-rings between the valve slices. Torque the tie-rods to the specification listed in your specific model's service manual.

  7. Calibration

After replacing an EHR valve, you must calibrate the new remote valve using the tractor's display monitor or the Electronic Service Tool (EST). The system needs to learn the new valve's spool travel limits and neutral position.
