Case IH 4147 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) control module: Rear Remote No. 4 - Over Voltage

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the #4 rear remote spool valve actuator or its control circuit is exceeding the maximum expected threshold (typically indicating a short to power or a failed internal potentiometer).

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Inspect the EHR control valve wiring harness at the rear of the tractor, specifically tracing the pigtail going to the #4 remote valve. Look for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or melted loom that could cause a short to battery voltage.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical plug at the #4 remote valve. Check for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion, which can bridge the 12V power supply to the 5V signal return.

  3. Voltage Testing: With the key ON (engine off), use a multimeter to probe the harness connector for the #4 valve. Verify that the reference voltage is correct (usually 5V) and that the signal wire is not showing battery voltage (12V+) when disconnected.

  4. Swap Test: To isolate whether the issue is in the tractor's wiring/armrest or the valve itself, swap the electrical connector from Remote #3 to Remote #4. If the fault code changes to the #3 remote (e.g., code 4136/4137), the electronic actuator head on the #4 valve is faulty. If the code remains 4147, the issue is in the wiring harness or the armrest controller.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize and Power Down

    Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers in the cab to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure. Disconnect the battery to protect the EHR module.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

    Locate the rear remote valve stack at the back of the tractor. Identify valve #4 (usually counted from left to right or bottom to top, depending on the specific chassis).

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged wires, or replace the EHR control valve wire harness entirely.

  4. Replace the Valve Actuator/Spool

    If the valve's internal potentiometer or driver is shorted: Disconnect the electrical connector to the #4 valve. Remove the mounting bolts securing the electronic control head (or the entire spool valve slice, depending on if the actuator is serviced separately on your specific model). Install the new valve slice or actuator head. Ensure O-rings are properly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic oil. Torque the tie-bolts to the manufacturer's specification to prevent spool binding or leaks.

  5. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery and electrical harness. Start the tractor and warm up the hydraulic oil. You must perform an EHR remote valve calibration using the AFS Pro700 display or the dealer electronic service tool so the controller can learn the new valve's neutral and maximum deflection voltages.
