Case IH 4148 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.4 - Spool Deflection Too Short

The main spool inside the #4 rear remote valve is not traveling its commanded distance (the physical movement is too low). This is generally caused by an internal mechanical fault (such as a binding spool) or a defective internal position transducer/potentiometer failing to read the correct spool travel.

   Verify the symptom by checking if the hydraulic flow from remote #4 is erratic, surging, or completely inoperative.

   Inspect the electrical harness and connectors at the #4 rear remote valve for corrosion, bent pins, or open/short circuits.

   Check system voltage to ensure the valve is receiving proper voltage (voltages under 8V or over 36V can cause the valve to shut down its output stage automatically).

   Check for mechanical binding to ensure the valve hasn't been manually overridden (which triggers code 4151) or jammed by debris in the hydraulic fluid.

   Check for related fault codes indicating a faulty position transducer (4153) or output stage faults (4152) on the same remote.

   Review service bulletins (e.g., Service Bulletin 2012-037) regarding EHR valve erratic flow and surging when running hydraulic motors, which requires a spool update.

   Depressurize the System

   Relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing the valve block.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the #4 rear remote valve.

   Remove the Valve

   Unbolt and remove the #4 remote valve from the rear hydraulic stack.

   Replace the Spool or Valve

   Depending on the exact model and dealer recommendations, you can either replace the internal main spool or replace the entire remote valve section. If the issue is related to surging/erratic flow, Case IH recommends installing an updated main spool that features an additional hydraulic oil bleed.

   Reassembly

   Install the new spool or complete replacement valve assembly. Reinstall the valve stack and torque mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect and Refill

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Top off the hydraulic fluid and bleed the system if necessary.

   Calibration

   Use the tractor's diagnostic interface or dealer tool to clear the fault codes and perform a mandatory hydraulic valve calibration procedure.
