Case IH 4149 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) / ATC (Armrest/Tractor Controller): Rear Remote No.4 - Spool Deflection Excessive

Issue description

The internal position sensor (potentiometer or transducer) on the #4 electronic remote valve is detecting that the hydraulic spool has traveled beyond its normal, calibrated physical limits. This is typically caused by an internal mechanical failure, debris physically wedging the spool open, or a faulty position transducer sending an out-of-range signal.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum
  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Steiger (350 to 600 horsepower models)
  • Puma (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Maxxum (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)

Check the cause

  1. Check for manual override: Verify if the valve has been operated manually using the override pins on the back of the valve block, which can push the spool past its electronic limits.

  2. Clear the fault code and run the EHR remote valve calibration procedure via the tractor's display/H-Menu to rule out a temporary glitch.

  3. Check the wiring harness at the #4 remote valve for shorts, undervoltage, or overvoltage.

  4. If calibration fails, inspect for mechanical binding or a failed sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and relieve hydraulic pressure by cycling the remote levers/buttons.

  2. Inspect the Actuator Head

Locate Rear Remote Valve #4 on the rear hydraulic stack.

  3. Remove the Electronic Actuator

Unplug the 4-pin connector from the proportional actuator head. Unbolt the actuator head from the valve slice.

  4. Inspect the Spool and Spring

With the actuator removed, check the mechanical spool inside the valve body. Ensure it moves freely and springs back to the neutral position. If the centering spring is broken or debris is jamming the spool, the valve slice will need to be disassembled, cleaned, or replaced.

  5. Replace the Actuator/Transducer

If the mechanical spool is perfectly fine, the fault lies within the position transducer located inside the electronic actuator head. Replace the actuator head.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

Install the new actuator or valve slice, plug in the harness, and perform the mandatory EHR valve calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new spool travel limits.
