Case IH 4154 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.4 - Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral

The electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve spool for the #4 rear remote is failing to return to its center (neutral) position when commanded. This is typically caused by a failure in the electronic pilot head or mechanical binding/scoring inside the main valve spool itself, often locking up the affected remote or all hydraulic functions.

   Isolate the Remote: Switch your implement hoses from remote #4 to another remote (like #1 or #2). If the implement works fine on the new remote and the tractor no longer throws a code, the issue is isolated to the #4 valve slice on the tractor.

   Check the In-Cab Controls: Ensure the EHR lever/switch for remote #4 is not physically sticking or binding.

   Inspect the Pilot Head: Check the wiring harness and electrical connector going to the #4 remote valve pilot head at the rear of the tractor for corrosion, backed-out pins, or wire chafing.

   Check for Mechanical Binding: If the electrical connections are sound, the issue is either a failed pilot head (most common) or a mechanically stuck main spool.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the rear remote valve stack. Contamination is the leading cause of hydraulic valve failure.

   Remove the Pilot Head

   Locate the #4 remote valve slice. Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the hex socket screws (typically M5 x 20mm) holding the pilot head assembly to the valve slice.

   Inspect the Main Spool

   Carefully pull the main flow control spool from the remote valve section. Inspect it for scoring, metal shavings, or mechanical binding.

   Replace the Pilot Head (or Valve)

   Replace the pilot head assembly, which resolves the issue the vast majority of the time. If the main spool is heavily scored, the entire valve slice may need to be replaced.

   Reassembly

   Lubricate the spool with clean hydraulic oil and reinsert it. Install the new pilot head assembly, ensuring the O-rings are properly seated. Torque the mounting screws to OEM spec (often around 27-31 Nm / 19-22 lb-ft for the end covers).

   After replacing the pilot head, use the tractor's Pro display or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and perform an EHR lever and valve calibration procedure.
