Case IH 4157 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Control Module: Rear Remote No.5 - Implausible EHR Control Messages

The controller is receiving corrupted, missing, or out-of-range CAN bus messages regarding Rear Remote Valve #5. This typically happens when the electronic 'pilot head' (proportional actuator module) suffers an internal controller failure, or there is a communication breakdown between the armrest controls and the valve. The tractor will often lock up the hydraulic functions for that remote until the machine is restarted.

   Isolate the Valve: Swap your implement's hydraulic hoses to a different remote (e.g., #3 or #4) to confirm the issue is strictly isolated to the #5 valve and not an implement issue.

   Inspect the Armrest Lever: Ensure the remote lever/encoder in the cab moves smoothly. Jerky movements or failing potentiometers in the armrest can sometimes cause message errors, though these usually throw separate Armrest (ARM) codes.

   Check CAN Bus Wiring: Disconnect the 4-pin connector at the #5 remote valve pilot head. Inspect for moisture, corrosion, or pushed pins.

   Test CAN Resistance: Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the CAN wiring between the CAN High and CAN Low terminals (typically blue and red wires) on the harness side. It should read approximately 120 ohms. If it does not, trace the harness for a short or break.

   Depressurize

   Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the tractor, and cycle the remote levers to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

   Remove the Actuator

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the #5 remote valve pilot head. Remove the hex-head mounting screws securing the pilot head to the valve slice and remove the assembly.

   Install the New Part

   Clean the mating surface, ensure the O-rings are properly seated, and bolt the new proportional actuator onto the valve body. Reconnect the wiring harness.

   Reassign Valve Addresses

   Because the new pilot head has a blank/new internal controller, you must use the tractor's display menu (or the Electronic Service Tool / EST) to reassign the valve addresses. This tells the tractor's main controller which cab lever corresponds to the newly installed #5 valve.

   Calibrate the Valve

   Perform the EHR valve calibration procedure. This tunes the spool movement to the new actuator for proper flow and ensures it can reliably find neutral. The valve may function without calibration, but flow will likely be erratic.
