Case IH 4159 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) / ATC: Rear remote no. 5 - not commanded neutral on power-up

When the tractor is keyed on, the controller detects that either the physical command lever/switch in the cab or the spool valve itself for rear remote #5 is not in the neutral position, or its neutral set point is out of calibration. As a safety precaution, the system locks out the remote valve and switches to a failsafe mode until the tractor is restarted with the fault cleared.

   Verify that the physical lever or switch for remote #5 in the armrest is actually resting in the center/neutral detent before turning the key on.

   Look for other EHR codes (such as 4160 for undervoltage, 4162/4163 for spool deflection issues, or 107-111 for armrest lever potentiometer failures) to determine if the issue is in the cab switch or the valve actuator.

   Enter the tractor's calibration menu (often accessed via the A-post display by holding the 'PROG' key while turning the ignition ON, then navigating to the 'ARM' section) and attempt to calibrate the EHR levers by moving them fully back, fully forward, and then returning them to neutral.

   Check the A-post display to isolate the component: if the remote shows active when physically centered, the armrest lever potentiometer is likely failing. If it calibrates fine but still locks out, the EHR pilot head is likely failing.

   Clear and Reset

   Ensure the lever is in neutral, clear the fault codes, and cycle the key. If the code does not return, it may have been an operator error (bumping the lever during startup).

   Calibrate the System

   Perform the EHR lever and valve calibration procedure using the tractor's display or the electronic service tool.

   Replace the Armrest Lever/Potentiometer

   If the calibration fails because the controller cannot read the neutral position of the lever, disassemble the armrest console and replace the failing remote valve lever potentiometer/switch assembly.

   Replace the EHR Pilot Head

   If the cab switch is functioning properly but the valve spool itself is sticking or the internal sensor in the valve actuator has failed, locate rear remote valve #5 at the rear of the tractor. Remove the EHR pilot head (the electronic module bolted to the top/end of the remote valve) and replace it.

   Reassign and Recalibrate

   After replacing the pilot head, you must use the service tool/display to reassign the valve addresses so the controller knows which lever controls the new valve head, followed by a final calibration to tune the valve for proper flow.
