Case IH 4159 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear remote no.5 – switched to failsafe
Issue description
The electronic controller has detected an operational anomaly with the 5th rear hydraulic remote valve and has disabled it (placed it in a failsafe mode) to prevent unintended hydraulic operation, implement damage, or safety hazards.
Applies to these machines

Check the cause
Check for Sub-Codes (e.g., 4160-4168) using the tractor's display to pinpoint the exact electrical or mechanical failure.
Check the live potentiometer reading for remote #5 during calibration using the 'H Menu' or CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the #5 rear remote valve for dirt, corrosion, backed-out pins, or wire chafing.
Repair steps
Relieve hydraulic pressure
Turn off the engine and ensure all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic circuits before removing caps, covers, or valves.
Inspect and repair harness
Disconnect the electrical connector at the #5 rear remote valve. Clean the contacts with contact cleaner. If the wiring is damaged or continuity to the EHR controller is broken, repair the harness.
Address mechanical binding
If codes 4162/4163 are present: Remove the valve end cap and inspect the spool for debris or scoring. If the spool is mechanically binding, the valve section must be disassembled, cleaned, and inspected.
Replace electronic control head
If diagnostics point to a faulty potentiometer or driver (Codes 4166/4167), remove and replace the electronic control head/potentiometer assembly on the #5 valve section.
Reassemble components
Reinstall all components and ensure the hydraulic O-rings between the valve slices are seated correctly to prevent leaks.
Clear codes and calibrate
Turn the key start switch ON. Connect the diagnostic tool (or use the H Menu navigation procedure) to clear the stored fault codes. You must perform the remote valve calibration procedure so the EHR controller can learn the new spool travel limits and neutral set points.
