4161

Case IH 4161 – EHR (Electro Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No. 5 - Over Voltage

Issue description

The electronic circuit controlling or monitoring the #5 electro-hydraulic rear remote valve is detecting a voltage level that exceeds the normal operating parameters. This is typically caused by a short to power in the wiring harness, a failure in the valve's internal potentiometer/position transducer, or a faulty output stage driver.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • Farmall
  • MX / TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the #5 rear remote valve for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to a 12V power source.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the #5 remote valve and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Test the supply voltage and signal return pins at the valve connector using a multimeter to verify if it is within the 5V reference range or receiving full battery voltage.

  4. Swap the electrical connection from Remote #5 to an adjacent working remote (e.g., #4) to isolate the component. If the code changes to the other remote, the valve is faulty; if it remains 4161, the issue is in the harness or controller.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a short to power was found in the harness during diagnostics, splice and repair the damaged wire using weather-sealed connectors.

  3. Replace the Valve Section

If the over-voltage is caused by an internal failure (failed internal potentiometer or faulty driver stage), relieve all hydraulic pressure, disconnect lines and connector, unbolt the #5 valve slice from the stack, install the new section ensuring O-rings are seated, and torque tie-rods to specification.

  4. Reassembly and Clear Codes

Reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness. Power on the tractor and use the dealer diagnostic tool (or onboard Armrest display) to clear the EHR fault codes.

  5. Calibrate

Perform the EHR lever calibration procedure, as installing a new valve or disturbing the system can trigger uncalibrated lever codes.
