Case IH 4162 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Deflection Too Short

Issue description

The internal spool of the #5 rear hydraulic remote valve is not traveling the expected distance when commanded by the system. This is typically caused by a mechanical internal fault (such as binding or a blockage restricting spool travel) or a defective internal position transducer/sensor failing to read the movement correctly.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Steiger / STX
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Check the #5 remote valve for physical binding, debris, or contamination in the hydraulic oil that could be physically restricting the spool's travel.

  2. Check the internal position transducer (sensor) on the #5 remote valve for proper voltage and operation, as a defective sensor will falsely report short deflection.

  3. Check for surging or erratic flow, especially if running continuous hydraulic motors (like a planter vacuum fan or air seeder), which can cause spool instability.

  4. Verify that the EHR valve is receiving proper voltage and check for related under/over voltage codes (like 31 or 32) which will cause the valve to shut down.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Ensure the tractor is off, the implement is lowered to the ground, and all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the system before servicing the valve block.

  2. Spool Replacement

If the issue is tied to the known planter/vacuum motor surging issue, update the remote valve main spool to a modified version that features an additional small hydraulic oil bleed.

  3. Valve Replacement

If the valve has an internal mechanical fault or a defective internal position sensor that cannot be serviced separately, replace the entire EHR remote valve section for Remote No. 5.

  4. Recalibration

After replacing the spool or the EHR valve section, perform an electronic calibration of the hydraulic system using the tractor's display/H-Menu so the EHR module can learn the new spool travel limits.
