Case IH 4164 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Open Center Position Not Reached

The electronic control system commanded the spool valve for the 5th rear hydraulic remote to return to its neutral (open center) position, but the internal position transducer/sensor detected that the spool did not physically reach that target position.

   Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at rear remote valve #5 for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

   Check the wiring between the EHR module and the remote valve for open circuits or shorts to ground.

   Test the spool position transducer (sensor) for proper voltage feedback to determine if the sensor has failed or if the spool is actually stuck.

   Check the hydraulic oil for contamination, as debris in the hydraulic fluid is a leading cause of spool binding.

   Relieve Pressure

   Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure by cycling the remote levers/buttons.

   Disconnect

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the actuator on rear remote valve #5.

   Disassemble

   Remove the valve actuator/end cap to access the main spool and the position sensor.

   Inspect & Clean

   Slide the spool out of the valve body bore. Inspect the spool and the bore for scoring, metal debris, or sticking. If debris is found, flush the valve body thoroughly.

   Replace Components

   If the spool was physically returning to the center but the code was thrown, replace the faulty position sensor/transducer. If the spool is heavily scored or binding in the bore, the entire remote valve section may need to be replaced.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the spool (lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid) and actuator using new O-rings to prevent leaks.

   Calibrate

   Reconnect the electrical harness. You must perform a hydraulic remote valve calibration procedure using the tractor's Pro 700/1200 display monitor or a dealer diagnostic tool so the EHR module can relearn the spool's neutral, extend, and retract limits.
