Case IH 4165 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote): Rear remote no. 5 - manually operated
Issue description
The control system has detected that the internal spool for rear remote valve #5 has moved from its neutral position without receiving an electronic command from the cab controls. This typically happens if the manual override lever on the valve itself is being used, if the spool is physically sticking/drifting, or if the position sensor inside the pilot head has failed and is reporting false uncommanded movement. When this code is thrown, the system will often lock out the hydraulic functions for that remote until the tractor is restarted.

Check the cause
Inspect the manual override lever/knob on rear remote valve #5 to ensure it is perfectly centered in the neutral position and hasn't been accidentally bumped or jammed by debris.
Clear the fault code from the display and test the remote to see if the code is active or stored. If it does not return, it may have been a temporary glitch or accidental manual operation.
Inspect the wiring harness and CAN bus connector going into the #5 pilot head for damaged wires, pushed-back pins, or corrosion that could interrupt the sensor signal.
Remove the electronic pilot head from the remote valve body and press on the end of the spool with your thumb. The spool should move freely within the bore and spring back slightly. If it sticks, the mechanical valve body is the issue.
Verify that the regulated circuit hydraulic pressures are within spec, as incorrect standby pressure can cause spool drift.
Repair steps
Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system and turn off the tractor.
Disconnect the electrical harness from the #5 remote valve pilot head.
Unbolt and remove the faulty pilot head from the mechanical valve body.
Install the new pilot head assembly and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.
Reconnect the wiring harness.
Renumber the Valves
Because the pilot head contains its own microprocessor, the tractor must "learn" the new valve. Use the tractor's display to renumber (address) the remote valves so the CAN bus recognizes valve #5.
Calibrate the Valve
Enter the EHR Calibration menu on the instrument cluster or Pro 700 display. Select the #5 remote valve and initiate the calibration sequence. The system will cycle the valve to learn the exact neutral, extend, and retract spool positions.
Test the remote under load to ensure the code does not return.
