Case IH 4166 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Output Stage Faulty

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault—such as an open circuit, a short circuit, or an internal driver failure—in the output circuit that sends power to the solenoid (pilot head/actuator) responsible for operating the #5 rear remote hydraulic valve.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the EHR controller and the #5 remote valve, paying special attention to the articulation joint on articulated tractors for rubbed or broken wires.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the #5 remote valve and inspect for loose connections, bent pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the remote valve solenoid coil (a healthy solenoid reads 4 to 8 ohms; over 10 ohms indicates an open circuit, under 3 ohms indicates a short).

  4. Perform a voltage test with the connector unplugged and the tractor keyed on; activating the #5 remote from the cab should show approximately 12 volts at the supply pin and low voltage at the ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, relieve hydraulic pressure, and turn off the engine.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

Locate the rear remote valve block at the rear of the tractor and identify the #5 slice (usually the outermost or top valve depending on the stack orientation).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a rubbed or broken wire in the harness (especially near articulation joints), splice and seal the damaged wire, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Solenoid/Actuator

If the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining hardware holding the electronic pilot head/solenoid to the #5 valve body. Install the new solenoid and torque to OEM specifications. Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is seated properly.

  5. Controller Replacement

If the solenoid and harness test perfectly, the EHR controller's internal output stage has failed. The controller will need to be replaced and flashed/calibrated by a dealer.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Restart the tractor. The active fault should clear. You may need to navigate to the tractor's H-Menu (e.g., H1 menu for calibrations) to recalibrate the electronic remotes so the controller can relearn the valve's neutral and full-stroke positions.
