Case IH 4168 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral

Issue description

This code indicates that the electronic controller has detected that the hydraulic spool valve for the 5th rear remote has failed to physically return to its center (neutral) position when the operator command was removed. This is typically caused by a failure in the remote valve's electronic pilot head, mechanical binding of the main spool, or a failing potentiometer in the armrest control lever.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Armrest Lever Calibration: Attempt an EHR calibration first to rule out a failing or out-of-calibration armrest lever potentiometer.

  2. Isolate the Issue: Swap the electrical connector from Remote No. 5 to another remote valve (e.g., No. 4). If the fault moves, the issue is in the armrest lever or wiring harness; if it stays, the issue is the valve's pilot head or spool.

  3. Check for Mechanical Binding: If the pilot head is removed, check if the main flow control spool moves freely to ensure it is not scored or binding.

Repair steps

  1. Initiate calibration mode

Hold the PROG key on the A-post display while turning the ignition key to the ON position.

  2. Navigate to calibration menu

Navigate to the ARM (Armrest) section to find the calibration menu.

  3. Cycle remote levers

Pull the remote levers fully back, push them fully forward, and then let them return to neutral.

  4. Restart and test

Turn off the key and wait 30 seconds before restarting the tractor to test.

  5. Relieve hydraulic pressure

If calibration does not fix the issue, relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system and thoroughly clean the rear remote valve stack to prevent contamination.

  6. Disconnect pilot head

Locate Remote Valve No. 5. Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the pilot head assembly.

  7. Remove pilot head

Remove the mounting screws securing the pilot head to the valve body and carefully remove the pilot head assembly.

  8. Inspect spool and lubricate O-rings

Inspect the main spool for scoring. Lubricate the new pilot head O-rings with clean hydraulic oil.

  9. Install new pilot head

Install the new pilot head assembly and tighten the mounting screws evenly.

  10. Reconnect and calibrate

Reconnect the electrical harness and perform the EHR calibration procedure again to sync the new actuator.
