Case IH 4169 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Not in Neutral When Switched On
Issue description
When the tractor is keyed on, the system detects that the hydraulic spool for the 5th rear remote valve is not in its neutral (centered) position. This is a safety interlock designed to prevent unintended hydraulic movement or pressure buildup at startup. The issue can be caused by a physically stuck cab switch, a mechanical failure inside the valve (such as a broken centering spring or debris binding the spool), a faulty spool position sensor, or a wiring issue.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Magnum
- Maxxum
- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
- Puma
- Steiger
Check the cause
Verify that the physical remote lever, paddle, or switch in the cab for Remote No. 5 is actually in the neutral position and not physically stuck or obstructed by debris.
Locate Rear Remote Valve No. 5 at the rear hydraulic stack. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connectors at the valve's position sensor and solenoids for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Attempt to recalibrate the remote valves using the tractor's display monitor (e.g., Pro 700 or Pro 1200). If the valve fails calibration, it points to a hard mechanical or sensor failure.
Listen or feel for the valve attempting to stroke when commanded. If it is receiving voltage but not moving, the spool may be mechanically bound.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and cycle the remote switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.
Clean Connections
Disconnect the electrical connector at the Remote No. 5 valve. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect. Clear the code and cycle the key to see if the fault returns.
Inspect the Centering Spring
If the code persists, the spool is likely failing to physically return to center. Remove the end cap of the remote valve slice (be prepared to catch residual hydraulic fluid).
Check for Debris/Damage
Inspect the centering spring mechanism. A broken spring is a common cause for a spool failing to return to neutral. Check the spool itself for scoring or debris causing it to bind.
Replace Components
If the spring is broken, replace the centering spring assembly. If the spool is heavily scored or the internal bore is damaged, the entire remote valve slice will need to be replaced.
Recalibrate
After reassembly or replacement, perform a full EHR remote valve calibration via the tractor's instrument cluster or display monitor to teach the EHR module the new neutral set points.
