Case IH 4177 – DU Module / EHR Controller: Rear EHR control no.3 - not calibrated (DU module only)
Issue description
The control module has lost the learned position values (neutral, full extend, and full retract) for the #3 rear Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve lever or spool. The system disables the #3 remote as a safety precaution because it cannot accurately determine the operator's commanded position.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Magnum
- Maxxum
- Steiger T4B
- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma Series (140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
- Magnum Series (235, 245, 255, 275, 285, 340)
- Steiger Series (350 to 600)
- Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Verify that the #3 remote lever or switch in the armrest physically returns to the center/neutral detent without sticking.
Look at the A-post display or instrument cluster for a 'move EHR to neutral' message or check if the green cylinder light stays on when the lever is physically centered (indicates a failing potentiometer).
Check for related electrical codes 4178 (Rear EHR Control No.3 Open Circuit) or 4179 (Rear EHR Control No.3 Short Circuit). If present, repair the wiring harness or sensor failure before attempting calibration.
Inspect the wiring harness from the armrest controls to the DU controller, and from the controller to the rear remote valve block.
Repair steps
Prepare tractor for calibration
Ensure the tractor is parked safely, the hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature, and no implements are actively connected to the #3 remote.
Enter calibration mode
Enter the tractor's calibration mode. On most models, this is done by holding the 'PROG' (Program) key on the A-post while turning the ignition key to the ON position.
Navigate to calibration menu
Navigate through the menu to the ARM section or the H-Menu (specifically the H1 menu for remote valve calibrations).
Select remote valve
Select the calibration sequence for the #3 remote valve.
Perform lever calibration
Follow the on-screen prompts carefully: Pull the #3 lever fully back (raise/extend position), push the lever fully forward (lower/retract position), and allow the lever to return to the neutral position.
Save calibration data
Turn off the ignition key and wait at least 30 seconds before restarting the tractor. This wait time is critical as it allows the DU module to save the new calibration values to the EEPROM.
Test and verify
Start the tractor and test the #3 remote. If the calibration fails to complete, or if the 4177 code returns immediately, the armrest potentiometer/lever or the remote valve spool has failed mechanically and must be replaced.
