Case IH 4179 – DU Module or CCM: Rear EHR control no.3 - short circuit

Issue description

The controller has detected a short circuit (either to ground or to power) in the electrical circuit responsible for operating the Rear Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve number 3.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the DU module to the rear remote valve stack for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short circuit to the tractor chassis.

  2. Disconnect the electrical plug at Rear EHR valve #3 and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins bridging the connections.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the EHR valve #3 solenoid coil. A reading of zero or near-zero ohms indicates an internal short in the coil.

  4. Swap the electrical connector from EHR valve #3 to a known good valve (such as EHR valve #2 or #4). If the fault code changes to the corresponding valve, the #3 valve solenoid is internally shorted. If the fault code remains 4179, the short circuit is in the wiring harness or DU module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    If the wiring harness is at fault: Disconnect the tractor's battery.

  2. Repair or replace harness

    Locate the shorted section of the harness, repair the wires using proper splicing and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Disconnect battery and relieve pressure

    If the EHR Valve #3 is internally shorted: Disconnect the tractor's battery and relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

  4. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty EHR valve #3.

  5. Remove tie-rod bolts

    Remove the tie-rod bolts holding the rear remote manifold stack together.

  6. Remove faulty valve slice

    Carefully slide out the faulty EHR valve slice, ensuring no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic system.

  7. Install new valve slice

    Install the new electro-hydraulic remote valve slice with new O-rings/seals.

  8. Reinstall tie-rods

    Reinstall the tie-rods and torque them to OEM specifications.

  9. Reconnect harness and battery

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  10. Calibrate hydraulic valve

    Perform a hydraulic valve calibration using the tractor's AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic tool. Failing to calibrate the new valve will immediately trigger fault code 4177.
