Case IH 418 – ENG (Engine Control Module / Engine ECU): Water in Fuel sensor indicates the water in the fuel filter needs to be drained.

Issue description

The Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor has detected an accumulation of water in the fuel system, or there is a circuit issue such as the WIF sensor circuit being shorted to a high source or suffering from moisture intrusion in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the fuel filter/water separator bowl to see if water has actually accumulated at the bottom.

  2. Inspect the WIF sensor electrical connector and engine harness for moisture, dirty or damaged pins, or wire insulation damage (moisture is a frequent cause of false alarms).

  3. Check for blown fuses in the sensor circuit area, especially if the monitor indicates the sensor is shorted to high.

Repair steps

  1. Drain the Filter

    Locate the fuel filter/water separator on the engine. Unplug the electrical wire connector from the WIF sensor at the bottom of the filter.

  2. Purge the Water

    Open the drain petcock/valve on the bottom of the filter assembly. Let the fluid drain until clean, good diesel fuel comes out, then retighten the valve.

  3. Clean and Reconnect

    Ensure the electrical connector is clean and dry. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the terminals to prevent moisture from causing false warnings, then plug it back in.

  4. Prime and Test

    Reprime the fuel system if necessary. Start the machine and run it to see if the fault code and alarm clear.

  5. Replace the Filter

    If the code persists, or if the filter is due for maintenance, replace the entire fuel filter/water separator.

  6. Replace the Sensor

    If draining the water and replacing the filter does not clear the code (and the wiring is intact), the WIF sensor itself has failed and must be replaced. Note: When installing a new sensor, hand-tighten it only. Using heavy tools can crack the plastic sensor body or damage the sealing O-ring.
