Case IH 4182 – DU Module: Rear EHR control no.4 - short circuit (DU module only)

The system has detected a short circuit in the electrical circuit controlling the Rear Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve number 4. This means there is either a short to ground or a short to power in the wiring harness, or the internal electronics/solenoid of the remote valve itself have failed and shorted out.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the DU module (behind the seat) to the rear EHR valve stack for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at Rear EHR Valve #4 and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge the circuit.

   Perform a swap test to isolate the component: Swap the electrical connection from EHR Valve #4 with an adjacent, known-good valve (like #3). If the fault code changes to the corresponding code for Valve #3, the short is internal to the valve. If it remains 4182, the short is in the wiring harness or DU module.

   Using a multimeter, test the signal and ground wires from the EHR #4 connector back to the DU module for continuity and ensure there is no continuity to the chassis ground.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Repair Wiring

   If the harness tested bad, locate the shorted section. Splice and solder the damaged wires, sealing them with marine-grade heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the EHR Valve

   Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system. Disconnect the electrical connector from EHR Valve #4. Remove the tie-bolts holding the remote valve stack together (be prepared for residual hydraulic oil to leak; have a catch pan ready). Remove the faulty EHR valve section and replace it with the new unit, ensuring all O-rings between the valve slices are properly seated and lubricated. Torque the valve stack tie-bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reassemble and Power Up

   Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

   Calibrate the Valve

   Enter the tractor's calibration menu (often the H9 menu on the instrument cluster/Pro monitor) and run the spool calibration procedure for Remote #4.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the inactive 4182 fault code from the DU module memory and test the remote valve for proper operation.
