4192

Case IH 4192 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Controller or ATC (Armrest Tractor Controller): Rear remote no. 3 - no communications

Issue description

The tractor's main controller has lost CAN bus communication with the electronic spool valve actuator (pilot head) for the 3rd rear hydraulic remote.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated codes to verify if there are other CAN bus communication errors. If multiple remotes are offline, the issue is likely a main harness or controller failure rather than the individual valve.

  2. Inspect the electrical connector at the #3 rear remote valve for corrosion, moisture, or pushed/bent pins.

  3. Verify that the #3 valve connector is receiving proper 12V power and ground from the harness.

  4. Test the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the EHR controller and the #3 valve connector for continuity and proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network).

  5. Swap the pilot head (actuator) from the #3 remote with a known good remote (such as #2 or #4). If the fault code changes to follow the swapped valve, the pilot head is defective. If the 4192 code remains, the issue is in the wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the battery disconnect switch before servicing the EHR valves.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the broken CAN/power wires or replace the EHR control valve wiring harness.

  3. Valve/Actuator Replacement

If the wiring is intact, remove the defective pilot head (transducer/actuator) from the top of the #3 spool valve slice and install the replacement part. (In some cases, the entire valve slice may need to be replaced if the pilot head is not sold separately).

  4. Valve Renumbering/Reassignment

After replacing the pilot head or valve, you must perform the EHR valve renumbering procedure using the tractor's display monitor or the Electronic Service Tool (EST). This assigns the correct CAN address to the new valve so the controller knows which lever operates it.

  5. Spool Calibration

Perform a hydraulic valve spool calibration to ensure the new valve finds its correct neutral, extend, and retract set points.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the 4192 fault code and test the #3 remote for normal operation.
