Case IH 4198 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) controller or ATC (Armrest/Tractor Controller): Rear remote No. 5 - no communications

The tractor's control network has lost CAN bus communication with the electronic actuator (pilot head) controlling the 5th rear hydraulic remote valve.

   Check for multiple EHR error codes. If multiple remotes are offline, the issue is likely a main CAN bus wiring failure or a blown fuse supplying the EHR valve stack rather than a single valve failure.

   Locate the Rear Remote No. 5 valve section at the rear of the tractor and visually inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector plugging into the pilot head (electronic actuator).

   Inspect the connector pins to ensure they are fully seated, not damaged, and that no pins are pushed out, corroded, or loose.

   Check for proper voltage and CAN bus continuity between the EHR controller and the Remote No. 5 connector. If the wiring is intact, the pilot head itself has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the rear remotes.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical connector from the pilot head on the Rear Remote No. 5 valve section.

   Replace the Pilot Head

   If wiring tests confirm the harness is good, the pilot head is faulty. Unbolt and remove the defective pilot head from the top of the valve body and install the new replacement unit.

   Reassign Valve Addresses

   After replacing the pilot head, you must use the tractor's display monitor or an electronic service tool to reassign the valve addresses. This tells the EHR controller which in-cab lever controls the newly installed valve.

   Calibrate the Valve

   Perform the EHR valve calibration procedure to tune the new pilot head for proper spool travel and flow function.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Clear fault code 4198 from the system memory and test Rear Remote No. 5 for normal operation.
