Case IH 42 – Transmission ECM: SOL_A_SHORT_12V_ERR 11 Fixed Crit.Dis

Issue description

The condition triggers when the tractor is being operated and the Clutch Pack (A) PWM Solenoid becomes unexpectedly energized due to a short circuit to a 12-volt power source.

Applies to these machines

  • JXC
  • TN Series
  • TNA Series
  • TN55
  • TN65
  • TN70
  • TN75
  • TN60A
  • TN70A
  • TN75A
  • TN85A
  • TN95A
  • Farmall series
  • JXU series

Check the cause

  1. Check for a short circuit to 12 volts in the wiring between Transmission ECM connector 1, pin 10 and the solenoid coil terminal

  2. Check for a short to 12 volts between ECM connector 1, pin 6 and the solenoid coil terminal, or across the solenoid coil terminals themselves

  3. Test the Clutch Pack (A) PWM Solenoid Coil for an internal short circuit

  4. If the wiring and solenoid are intact, check the ECM for an internal driver shorted to 12 volts

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the tractor's battery before servicing electrical or transmission components.

    Safety First

  2. Locate the Power Shuttle Control Valve Assembly on the transmission. Identify the Clutch Pack (A) solenoid, which is the bottom, horizontal solenoid on the valve assembly.

    Locate the Solenoid

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the Clutch Pack (A) solenoid.

    Isolate the Circuit

  4. Using a multimeter, check the harness side (specifically tracing back to ECM Connector 1, Pins 6 and 10) for unwanted 12V voltage when the key is on. If 12V is present where it shouldn't be, locate and repair the chafed/shorted wire in the harness.

    Test the Wiring

  5. Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil terminals. If the coil is shorted out internally, remove the retaining hardware, extract the faulty solenoid from the valve body, and install a replacement.

    Test the Solenoid

  6. If the wiring harness and the solenoid both test perfectly normal, the Transmission ECM has a faulty internal driver and must be replaced or sent out for repair.

    ECM Replacement (If Necessary)

  7. Reconnect the solenoid harness, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes using the diagnostic menu to verify the repair.

    Reassembly
