Case IH 4212 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller or Armrest/Tractor Central Controller: EHR 2 Message counter error or Valve command different from valve feedback
Issue description
The tractor's control system is sending a CAN-bus command to the #2 remote valve to move its spool to a specific position, but the position transducer (feedback sensor) on the valve is reporting that the spool is in a different position. Alternatively, the 'message counter error' indicates a CAN-bus communication timeout or sync issue between the valve's electronic module and the main controller. This typically happens when the mechanical spool is physically stuck due to debris, the electronic pilot head (actuator) has failed, or there is a wiring/communication fault.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Optum
- Quadtrac
- Magnum 290
- Steiger 400
Check the cause
Manually stroke the valves back and forth to clear internal debris that might be causing the spool to stick.
Perform a component swap test by swapping the electronic pilot head from the #2 remote to another working remote (like #3 or #4) to see if the fault follows the module.
Inspect the 6-pin Deutsch connectors at the EHR 2 valve for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins, which can interrupt the CAN signal.
Attempt to recalibrate the EHR valves using the tractor's instrumentation display or the Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic system pressure.
Disconnect Electrical
Unplug the 6-pin Deutsch connector from the EHR 2 pilot head.
Remove the Pilot Head
Unbolt and remove the electronic pilot head (actuator module) from the rear remote valve block.
Inspect the Spool
Check the mechanical spool inside the valve body for scoring, binding, or contamination. Clean the spool and valve bore if debris is found.
Replace the Component
Install the new electronic pilot head onto the valve section.
Recalibrate
You must calibrate the new CAN-based EHR valve prior to use. Navigate to the EHR CAL screen on the tractor's display (or use the EST tool) and follow the prompts to calibrate the valve spool travel limits.
