4213

Case IH 4213 – TCU, Armrest Controller, UCM, or XCM: Short circuit to ground at clutch K2 / EHR 3 Message counter error or Valve command different from valve feedback

Issue description

Code 4213 indicates a short circuit to ground at clutch K2 (or Engine Crank Without Fuel Injection in J1939). An EHR 3 error indicates a CAN bus communication issue (message counter error) or a mechanical bind/failed position sensor causing the valve command to differ from valve feedback.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. For EHR 3 Mismatch/Communication: Check the CAN bus wiring and connections between the armrest controller, the UCM, and the EHR 3 valve.

  2. For EHR 3 Mismatch/Communication: Verify if other EHR valves (e.g., EHR 4) are also experiencing communication errors, which would indicate a shared CAN bus issue rather than a single valve failure.

  3. For EHR 3 Mismatch/Communication: Attempt to recalibrate the remote valves via the tractor's display (e.g., AFS Connect monitor).

  4. For Code 4213 (Clutch K2 Short): Inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the K2 clutch solenoid for chafing or a short to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect a diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or the Case IH EST) to read the active fault codes, ECU data, and verify which module is flagging the error.

  2. Perform valve calibration

If diagnosing the EHR 3 valve: Navigate to the remote valve configuration/calibration menu (H-Menu or AFS display) and perform a valve calibration.

  3. Inspect EHR 3 valve spool

If calibration fails due to a feedback mismatch, inspect the EHR 3 valve spool for debris, contamination, or mechanical binding.

  4. Check electrical connector

Check the electrical connector at the EHR 3 valve for corrosion or damaged pins causing the 'message counter error'.

  5. Repair K2 clutch wiring

If diagnosing the 4213 K2 Clutch code: Locate the K2 clutch solenoid on the transmission valve body. Repair any shorted wiring to ground.

  6. Replace faulty components

Replace the faulty EHR valve slice or K2 clutch solenoid if internal electrical/mechanical failure is confirmed.

  7. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes and test operate the tractor's hydraulics or transmission to verify the repair.
