Case IH 4214 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller or Armrest Controller: EHR 4 Message counter error or Valve command different from valve feedback
Issue description
The controller is commanding the #4 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve spool to move to a specific position, but the feedback from the valve's internal position sensor does not match the commanded position. Alternatively, it indicates a CAN bus communication failure, often displaying as an 'EHR 4 Offline Err'.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Magnum 235-340
- MX Magnum
- Puma 140-185
- Puma 150
- Steiger series
Check the cause
Check CAN bus communication by verifying the wiring harness and connector at the #4 EHR valve for open circuits, shorts, or damaged pins (addresses 'EHR 4 Offline Err').
Inspect in-cab controls, specifically the armrest joystick or EHR 4 lever, for incorrect voltage that could send erratic commands.
Check for erratic flow or mechanical binding inside the spool, especially if the valve is used to run continuous hydraulic motors.
Verify the calibration status of the valve to ensure it has not lost its calibration (look for codes 4216-4219).
Repair steps
Inspect and Clean Connections
Disconnect the wiring harness at the EHR 4 valve. Clean the contacts, ensure the plug and O-ring are intact, and reconnect.
Update the Main Spool
If the fault is caused by erratic flow or surging (especially when running planter/air seeder motors), replace the remote valve main spool with an updated version that features an additional small hydraulic oil bleed.
Replace the Control Module / Valve
If the valve's internal electronics have failed (causing the permanent offline/message counter error), the EHR control module or the entire remote valve section must be replaced.
Recalibrate the Valve
After replacing the spool, module, or entire valve, you must perform a valve calibration procedure using the tractor's display or diagnostic tool, as the new spool will not be recognized.
Clear Codes
Clear the fault codes from the EHR controller and test the #4 remote valve for proper operation.
