Case IH 4216-01 - DEC – DEC: Transmission reverse clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage low
Issue description
The controller has detected that the voltage in the circuit for the transmission's reverse clutch solenoid has dropped below the normal operating range. This usually indicates an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure (open coil) within the reverse clutch solenoid itself.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface with the parking brake engaged and completely immobilized before performing tests.
Inspect the wiring harness routing from the DEC to the transmission valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.
Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid connector (X-033) and inspect for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins.
Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the DEC harness and the solenoid connector, and test the circuit for a short to ground.
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid. An infinite (open) or zero (shorted) reading indicates a failed coil.
With the tractor safely immobilized, verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving the proper command voltage from the DEC when reverse is selected.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a flat surface, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing where the directional clutch solenoids are mounted.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the female electrical connector (X-033) from the reverse clutch solenoid.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or a damaged connector, splice in a new replacement pigtail connector using heat-shrink butt connectors to ensure a weather-tight seal.
Remove the Solenoid
If the solenoid itself failed the resistance test, clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining nut or bolt securing the reverse clutch solenoid coil to the valve cartridge.
Install the New Part
Slide the new OEM reverse clutch solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining hardware. Torque to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Turn the key on and use the tractor's AFS Pro monitor or an electronic service tool to clear the 4216-01 fault code. Finally, perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration (specifically the Reverse Clutch calibration) to ensure the DEC learns the fill times for the new solenoid, preventing harsh shifting.
