Case IH 4216-03 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission reverse clutch solenoid - voltage above normal or short circuit to battery
Issue description
The controller is detecting an unexpectedly high voltage on the circuit responsible for actuating the reverse clutch solenoid, which usually means the wiring is shorted to a +12V power source or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum 235-340 series
Check the cause
Test solenoid resistance (internal failure cause): Disconnect the electrical connector at the reverse clutch solenoid and measure resistance across the coil pins. A healthy solenoid should measure 8 to 11 Ohms; replace if outside this range.
Check for short-to-power (wiring short cause): If the solenoid tests okay, disconnect the TCU connector, turn ignition ON, and measure voltage between the solenoid signal wire pin and ground. If +12V is present, trace and repair the short to battery.
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the transmission control module to the reverse clutch solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires.
Repair steps
Preparation
Clean the area around the transmission control valve block (located on the side of the transmission case) to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Removal
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining hardware holding the solenoid to the transmission valve body.
Inspection
Carefully pull the solenoid out. Inspect the valve spool for any sticking or metal contamination, which could indicate deeper transmission clutch pack wear.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Calibration
After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, clear the fault codes and perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor to ensure smooth engagement.
