Case IH 4216-04 - DEC – DEC: Transmission reverse clutch solenoid - voltage below normal or short to ground
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting an abnormally low voltage draw or an open/short circuit to ground on the circuit that powers the reverse clutch solenoid. When this occurs, the controller cannot properly energize the solenoid, which will prevent the transmission from engaging reverse gear or cause erratic shifting.

Check the cause
Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid connector and measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. OEM specifications typically require 8 to 11 Ohms. If outside this range, the solenoid coil has failed internally.
If the solenoid tests good, disconnect the main harness at the CCU/DEC. Test the specific wires running to the reverse clutch solenoid for continuity. Check for a short to ground by measuring resistance between the signal wire and the tractor chassis.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Measure the voltage at the CCU connector pins corresponding to the reverse clutch to ensure the controller is outputting the correct voltage and that there is no short to a positive voltage source.
Inspect the solenoid connector (e.g., Connector X-033) for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or wire chafing, which is a common cause of voltage below normal codes.
Repair steps
Isolate the circuit
Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the valve body
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the specific proportional solenoid assigned to the Reverse Clutch.
Remove the faulty solenoid
Disconnect the electrical harness plug. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge (or remove the entire modulating valve assembly depending on the specific transmission variant).
Install the new solenoid
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and clear codes
Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the battery power back on, connect a diagnostic service tool (or use the tractor's H-Menu/Pro menu), and clear the inactive 4216-04 fault code.
Transmission calibration
Because a clutch control component was replaced, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration (fill time/pressure calibration) so the DEC can learn the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
