Case IH 4216-05 - DEC – DEC: Transmission reverse clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault current below normal

The transmission controller is attempting to energize the reverse clutch solenoid to engage reverse gear, but it is not detecting the expected electrical current flow. This is almost always caused by a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or a burnt-out (open) solenoid coil.

   Ensure the tractor is parked on level ground, the parking brake is set, the wheels are chocked, and the machine cannot move.

   Turn the key switch OFF and visually inspect the reverse clutch solenoid wiring harness and connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage.

   Measure the resistance across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid coil using a multimeter (should read 3 to 10 ohms). If it reads 'OL', the internal coil is burnt out.

   If the solenoid tests within specification, test the continuity of the harness from the solenoid connector back to the Drivetrain Electronic Controller (DEC) to locate an open circuit or broken wire.

   Prepare machine for repair

   Safely bring the machine to a complete stop, set the parking brake, chock the wheels, and turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the vehicle battery if you are repairing the wiring harness.

   Repair wiring harness

   If repairing the harness: Splice in a new electrical pigtail/connector if the original plug is damaged, ensuring weather-tight seals on the connections.

   Replace solenoid

   If replacing the solenoid: Clean the area around the transmission valve body to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining hardware, extract the faulty reverse clutch solenoid, and install the new OEM solenoid. Torque the retaining bolts to factory specifications.

   Reconnect connector

   Reconnect the electrical connector securely to the solenoid.

   Clear fault codes

   Turn the key ON (engine off), connect your diagnostic service tool (or use the tractor's onboard display), and clear the fault codes.

   Perform calibration

   After replacing transmission clutch components, you will likely need to perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure. The system will often flag a 'Reverse Clutch Not Calibrated' code (e.g., Code 2360 or Trans 133) until this is completed.

   Verify repair

   Operate the vehicle and attempt to shift into reverse to verify the repair.
