Case IH 4216-06 - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Transmission Reverse Clutch Solenoid electrical circuit fault - current above normal or grounded circuit
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the electrical current flowing through the reverse clutch solenoid circuit is higher than the commanded or expected value. This is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness between the controller and the solenoid, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the transmission solenoids for rubbed, pinched, or melted wires that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the main connectors from the transmission controller and measure the resistance of the reverse clutch solenoid circuit on the harness side (expected 2-10 ohms). A near-zero reading indicates a short circuit.
Disconnect the harness directly at the reverse clutch solenoid and test the harness pins for continuity to ground. If continuity exists, the harness is shorted. If the harness tests fine, the short is internal to the solenoid coil.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the transmission valve block on the side or top of the transmission housing. Identify the reverse clutch solenoid (refer to your specific model's hydraulic schematic).
Harness Repair (If applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a shorted harness, locate the damaged section of the wire. Splice and solder a new section of wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Solenoid Replacement (If applicable)
If the solenoid is determined to be internally shorted, clean the area around the transmission valve block, unplug the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolts or snap ring, and pull the old solenoid out. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, insert it into the valve block, secure it with the retaining hardware, and reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassembly and Testing
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON, connect a diagnostic tool (or use the tractor's onboard display) to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the engine and shift into reverse to verify the repair and ensure no codes return.
