4216-13 - DEC

Case IH 4216-13 - DEC – Transmission Controller (TCU): Transmission reverse clutch solenoid out of calibration

Issue description

The transmission controller has lost or rejected the stored fill times and engagement bite points for the reverse clutch pack. This results in harsh shifting, delayed engagement (e.g., a 3-4 second delay when shuttling from forward to reverse), or a complete failure to pick up gears. If the issue is electrical, the controller measures current from the solenoid circuit that exceeds the set limit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH MX Magnum series (Gen I and Gen II)
  • Case IH MXU Series (e.g., MXU115)
  • Case STX Steiger series

Check the cause

  1. Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor and visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the solenoids under the cab. Look for abnormal routing, rubbing, or wire damage.

  2. Disconnect the main connectors (e.g., C350 and C355) from the transmission controller.

  3. Check for voltage or shorts to ground on the specific solenoid pins (e.g., pin 16 and pin 4). The voltage should be exactly 0 volts.

  4. Operate other tractor functions (PTO, MFD, Diff Lock, AC, lights) while monitoring the multimeter to locate the source of any intermittent short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Enter Calibration Mode

Start the tractor while holding the upshift rocker switch. Within 3 seconds of turning the key, hit the downshift switch (or hold the two alternate shift buttons while starting). The dash should display “CAL” in the lower display.

  2. Setup

Ensure the parking brake is drawn, place the range lever in the Neutral position, move the shuttle to Forward, and set engine RPMs to 1200.

  3. Syncro Calibration

Hold the upshift switch while the synchronizers calibrate. The display will count from 1 through 5 and then show "END".

  4. Clutch C1 Calibration

Release and then hold the upshift switch again to calibrate clutch C1. When complete, the display will flash between "C1" and the calibration value.

  5. Clutch C2 Calibration

Hold the downshift switch and repeat the same procedure to calibrate C2.

  6. Clutch C3 & C4 Calibration

Shift the tractor into high range. Holding the upshift switch will calibrate C3, and holding the downshift switch will calibrate C4.

  7. Save

Turn the engine off to store the new calibration values in the TCU.
