Case IH 4217 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.2 - Valve Spool Not Calibrated

Fault code 4217 indicates that the electronic controller has detected that the spool for Rear Remote Valve No. 2 has not been calibrated, has lost its saved calibration values, or failed to successfully complete a recent calibration cycle. This prevents the controller from knowing the exact physical position of the valve spool relative to the operator's command, often resulting in the remote valve being disabled or defaulting to a fail-safe neutral state.

   Armrest Switch Check: Verify the physical operation of the Rear Remote No. 2 lever/switch on the armrest. A failing potentiometer inside the lever is a highly common cause for calibration failures. If the tractor requests you to return the lever to neutral when it physically already is, the switch is likely failing.

   Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the armrest controller to the EHR controller, and from the EHR controller to the rear remote valve stack. Look for pinched wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

   Hydraulic Inspection: Check the rear remote valve stack for physical damage, sticking spools, or heavy hydraulic leaks that might prevent the spool from stroking fully during calibration.

   Attempt Calibration: Always attempt a software calibration before replacing hard parts. If the calibration process hangs or fails on Remote No. 2, note whether it fails on the lever input or the valve response.

   Prepare tractor for calibration

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the hydraulic oil is up to normal operating temperature. Ensure no implements are plugged into the Rear Remote No. 2 couplers.

   Press PROG key

   With the tractor off, press and hold the "PROG" (Program) key on the A-post display.

   Turn ignition ON

   While holding the PROG key, turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine).

   Navigate to calibration mode

   Navigate through the A-post menu to find the "ARM" (Armrest) or "EHR" section, and select the remote valve calibration mode.

   Move levers

   The display will prompt you to move the levers. For Remote No. 2, pull the lever fully backward (retract detent), then push it fully forward (extend/float detent), and finally allow it to spring back to the center neutral position.

   Turn ignition OFF

   Once the display indicates the stroke has been learned, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

   Wait 30 seconds

   Wait a minimum of 30 seconds before turning the key back on. This allows the EHR module to write the new calibration values to its non-volatile memory.

   Test remote

   Start the tractor and test the remote. If the code clears, the repair is complete. If the calibration fails or the code immediately returns, you will need to replace the SCV armrest switch/potentiometer or the rear remote valve slice itself, then repeat this calibration procedure.
