Case IH 4218 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) control module: Rear Remote No.3 - Valve Spool Not Calibrated

Issue description

The controller has lost the calibration values for the neutral, extend, and retract positions of the spool for the third rear hydraulic remote valve, or the spool is failing to reach its calibrated set points.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum series
  • Steiger / Quadtrac series
  • Puma series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the armrest lever or switch for Remote No.3 is physically returning to the exact neutral (middle) position to rule out a failing detent or physical obstruction.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the armrest controls, the EHR controller, and the rear remote valve pilot head for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. Check for accompanying EHR codes (such as 4136 'Open Center Position Not Reached' or 4140 'Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral') which might indicate a mechanical jam in the valve spool rather than just a calibration loss.

Repair steps

  1. Perform A-Post Calibration

Hold the 'PROG' key in while turning the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine). Navigate the menu to find the 'ARM' section where the calibration settings are located. Pull the Remote No.3 lever fully back (retract), then push it fully forward (extend), and finally let it return to neutral. Turn off the key and wait at least 30 seconds before starting the tractor to test the remote.

  2. Perform Pro 700 Display Calibration

If equipped with a Pro 700 display, navigate to the remote valve calibration wizard and follow the on-screen prompts to cycle the levers.

  3. Perform Dealer Tool Calibration

If manual calibration fails, a Case IH technician may need to plug a calibration cable into the test port located at the back of the tractor under the cab to force the calibration via the Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  4. Replace Hardware

If the valve will not accept calibration, the issue is typically a failing potentiometer in the armrest lever or a faulty pilot head (the electric module that controls the remote valve) on the valve block itself. Replace the faulty component and repeat the calibration procedure.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Armrest Remote Lever / Potentiometer

Often the root cause when the lever fails to register neutral.

  • EHR Valve Pilot Head / Electric Module

The electronic actuator on the valve that physically moves the spool.

  • Remote Valve Main Spool

    47429154

Updated spool released by Case IH to fix erratic flow/surging issues on EHR valves, which may be relevant if the valve is being rebuilt.

  • EHR Control Valve Wiring Harness (4 Spool)

    84151662

Fitment: Case IH Steiger 350-620 models.
