Case IH 4219 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.4 - Valve Spool Not Calibrated

Issue description

This code indicates that the control system does not have a valid calibration saved for the 4th rear auxiliary hydraulic remote valve. This can happen if the calibration data is lost, if a new uncalibrated controller/valve was installed, or if a hardware failure (such as a faulty armrest potentiometer or sticking valve spool) is preventing the system from successfully completing the calibration sweep.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Armrest Switch/Potentiometer Test: Check if the tractor's display shows the lever in a different position (e.g., lower) than its physical position (e.g., neutral).

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Test the harness from the armrest controls to the EHR controller, and from the controller to the rear remote valve No. 4 for open circuits, shorts, or corrosion.

  3. Attempt Manual Calibration: Attempt to manually calibrate the EHR valves to see if the system successfully learns the spool travel limits.

  4. Physical Valve Inspection: Check if the spool in the No. 4 valve slice is physically binding or sticking, preventing the actuator from reaching its commanded limits.

Repair steps

  1. Perform the EHR Calibration Procedure

Enter the calibration menu on the A-post display (often accessed by holding the 'PROG' key while turning the ignition key to ON). Navigate to the ARM or EHR section, follow the on-screen prompts to retract, extend, and return the No. 4 lever to neutral. Turn off the key and wait exactly 30 seconds before restarting to save the calibration data.

  2. Replace the Armrest SCV Switch

If the calibration fails because the lever position is not recognized, disassemble the armrest console, unplug and replace the No. 4 remote lever switch assembly, and re-run the calibration procedure.

  3. Replace the Valve Spool / Valve Slice

If the switch tests good but the valve physically cannot achieve calibration or hydraulic flow is erratic, relieve all hydraulic pressure and clean the valve stack. Remove the No. 4 remote valve slice, disassemble the actuator end, and install the new spool assembly (or replace the entire valve slice). Reassemble the valve stack, torque the tie rods to OEM specifications, and perform the EHR calibration procedure.

Parts you might need
