Case IH 4220 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Valve Spool Not Calibrated
Issue description
The controller has lost the stored calibration values (the exact electrical parameters for the neutral, extend, and retract positions) for the 5th rear remote valve spool, or a recent calibration attempt failed to complete successfully.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Magnum
- Steiger T4B
- Steiger
- Quadtrac
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Optum
Check the cause
Check for accompanying EHR codes on Remote No. 5 (e.g., 4158 EEPROM error, 4160 under voltage, 4162 spool movement too low). Fix any hard electrical failures before attempting calibration.
Test the armrest SCV lever potentiometer in the tractor's H-Menu/diagnostics screen to ensure it reads correctly.
Verify hydraulic fluid is up to normal operating temperature (cold oil will cause calibration procedures to fail).
Ensure the engine is running, as the EHR system requires hydraulic pressure and an active engine speed signal.
Repair steps
Enter Calibration Mode
On older A-post display models, hold the PROG key while turning the ignition key to the ON position. Navigate to the ARM or EHR section to find the remote valve calibrations. On Pro 700/1200 displays, navigate to the calibrations menu via the touchscreen.
Select Remote No. 5
Choose the calibration sequence for the 5th rear remote.
Cycle the Lever
Follow the on-screen prompts. You will typically be asked to pull the SCV lever fully backward (retract detent), push it fully forward (extend detent), and then let it return to the neutral position.
Save the Calibration
Once the display indicates the calibration is complete, turn the key OFF and wait at least 30 seconds before restarting the tractor. This allows the EHR controller to write the new values to the EEPROM.
Advanced Dealer Calibration
If the onboard calibration fails repeatedly, a technician may need to use the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) software along with a remote valve calibration tool/pressure transducer (e.g., tool # CAS2806) plugged into the tractor's diagnostic test port to monitor load sense signal pressure during calibration.
Component Replacement
If the valve still refuses to calibrate, replace the armrest SCV lever (if the potentiometer is erratic) or the EHR valve spool assembly itself.
